Grief Counseling Q & A

Grief counseling, also called bereavement therapy, helps you cope after losing a partner, family member, friend, or beloved pet. Grief consists of five stages:

Denial

It’s common for people to have difficulty accepting the news that someone they love has died. You might believe it must be a mistake and that your loved one will walk through the door any minute.

Anger

Anger can take over when you realize there’s been no mistake and the worst has happened. You might shout about the unfairness of the situation and want to find someone to blame.

Bargaining

Bargaining is where you pray or plead to your God or spiritual leader, promising you’ll do anything to get your loved one back.

Depression

Depression sets in when you know there’s nothing you can do to change what’s happened. This stage of the grieving process is where you feel overwhelmed by sadness and despair.

Acceptance

If you process your grief correctly, you can reach the acceptance stage and start recovering from the trauma of loss.

Everyone’s experience of coping with death is unique to them. But most people go through these five stages of grief, but for others, each stage can takes hours or days, sometimes months, even years.

It’s common to get stuck in a particular stage like anger or depression if you don’t benefit from expert grief counseling.

The death of someone you love causes severe emotional distress. It can affect your ability to function in everyday life. Grief counseling helps you get through your loss.

In the short term, grief counseling enables you to deal with practical issues like funeral arrangements and sorting your loved one’s financial affairs. Over an extended period, grief counseling helps you accept your loss and move forward.

Some of the grief counseling techniques Dr. Vansiea uses include:

Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)

ACT encourages you to recognize your loss and the feelings you’re experiencing. It helps you find healthy ways to overcome your grief without turning to alcohol, drugs, or food for comfort.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you identify thinking that reinforces your grief. Dr. Vansiea shows you practical ways to challenge your thoughts and feelings to make daily life easier.

You might also benefit from group therapy, where you meet with other people who’ve also suffered a loss.
